Coenraad F.A. Moorrees




This Web site is dedicated to the memory of Coenraad Frans August Moorrees, 1916-2003. Dr. Moorrees was a professor of orthodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine from 1964-1987, a renowned scholar with wide-ranging interests, and author of seminal publications that shaped the fields of craniofacial biology and orthodontic practice.


A native of the Netherlands, Dr. Moorrees trained in his native Holland and in the United States. He received a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1941, and later pursued further studies at the Forsyth Dental infirmary for Children in Boston. In 1959, he joined the Harvard School of Dental Medicine as an associate professor of orthodontics. He was made full professor in 1964, and upon his death was Professor of Orthodontics, Emeritus, along with Senior Staff Member, Emeritus, at the Forsyth Institute.


Dr. Moorrees received many awards and accolades during his career, but the one he treasured most was given in 1985 by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands: Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau, the nation’s highest civilian honor.


His insightful and influential work in differential diagnosis and treatment planning remains a cornerstone of the orthodontic specialty program at Harvard and at other dental schools around the world.
